Since the beginning of time humans have been traveling from one place to another. This has led to the construction of a vast network of roads that connect different areas, cities and countries. Some of these roads are truly impressive and real achievements of engineering, others are more of a curiosity.
Ebenezer Place – Located in Scotland, this street is only 2.06 metres long and is known to be the shortest street in the world. There is only one edifice on the street dates back to 1883. Ebenezer Place was officially declared a street in 1887.- Pan-American Highway – Also known as the Americas, this is the world longest road with a length of 48.000 kilometers. The highway passes through a total of 15 nations, including the United States, Mexico, Canada, Argentina and Peru.
- Parliament Street – Aside of being home to the shortest street in the world, the United Kingdom is also the location of the narrowest street in the world. Originally called Small Street, it is 64 centimeters wide at its narrowest point. The street is 50 metres long and dates back to the 14th century.
- Road to Giza – As you can already guess from its name, this road is located in the African country of Egypt. It is known to be the oldest paved road in the world as archaeological studies have showed that the road was built over 4.600 years ago. It is six and a half feet wide and covers a distance of over seven miles.
- 9 de Julio Avenue – Perhaps the most famous avenue in South America and certainly the widest street in the world, this road is named after the 9th of July (Argentina’s Independence Day). It was a total of six lanes and is the location of numerous famous landmarks such as the old French Embassy, Plaza de la Republic, Obelisco de Buenos Aires and a statue of Don Quixote.
- Lombard Street – The city of San Francisco is known all over the world for its steep streets but this street isn’t known to be the steepest street in the world. Lombard Street is actually the world’s crookedest street, as it has a total of hair-pin turns. The turns were added for security reasons as the street would have been too steep for most vehicles.
- Savoy Court – This is the only street in the entire United Kingdom where automobiles must driver on the right (instead of the left side of the road as it is in the UK). This exception was made via a special act of parliament. If you choose to relax with a visit to the capitol with your move complete you have the chance to check it out.
- Steepest Street (Baldwin Street) – As the name suggests this New Zealand based street is the steepest in the world. It has a 35% grade and makes driving on the street a hard and laborious job. The top of the street is reinforced with concrete as asphalt tends to slide down when the weather is hot.
